Feeding and Food Preparation
Many of our clients require assistance with food and eating. Our clients range from those who are able-bodied to those who are completely disabled. Some clients just want a little help with shopping or cooking while others need help putting the food in their mouths. Some of the most enjoyable experiences our caregivers have with their clients are during the preparation and serving of food. There is something about shopping, cooking, and eating together that just feels good. And there’s nothing quite like the smell of food cooking to make a house feel like a home.
Presidio Home Care encourages our caregivers to bond with their clients around food. Part of our extensive orientation and training is dedicated to food. We review the technical stuff (of course) like:
• handling and preparing food safely
• watching temperatures
• checking for expired goods
• being cognizant of food allergies
• etc.
We also review the importance of psychology and food. Some of our elder clients don’t have the physical ability to prepare or eat their own food. For most of these clients, food was a big part of their lives. The loss of their abilities surrounding food is a constant reminder of their limitations.
Presidio Home Care teaches our caregivers to rekindle the positive feelings surrounding food. Our caregivers are taught to encourage client participation in all aspects of food preparation. If the client cannot go to the store themselves, the caregiver will make sure that their client is in charge of the shopping list. If the client cannot prepare food, the caregiver will have the client oversee the preparations. If the client is able to see, they can read the recipe to the caregiver while they make it, give them tips and suggestions on how to make the recipe, and be actively involved in making the meal.
